A Walk on the Wild Side by Louis Thomas
Review or purchase this book from Amazon.co.uk here...

Join the adventure to see animals around the world.  A brilliant new book, published in September 2016 from Frances Lincoln Children's Books.

This is an epic, action packed journey across some of the world's most incredible habitats and brings a colourful cast of 65 animal friends, all captured in fine detail by wildlife lover Louis Thomas.

The book is set  out in individual pages for each animal and illustrations by Louis which capture the character as well as the detail of the animal. Each page has a description and is written from a young boy adventurer who journeys across the planet.

Did you know, for instance, that the green iguana is like humans? It likes to be around others of its own kind and it's friendly. A striking difference is that it searches for food in the trees and drinks water from raindrops on flowers and leaves!

As you move from farm to ocean and from jungle to grassland, you'll discover how every creature on earth has one thing in common... they are unique.

Throughly recommended for ages 7 and above at home and in school.

Our team recently worked in Hong Kong with Ifeoma and we are delighted that her exhibition was such a success.

Her most well known book, A is for Africa, is out in a new edition this year and published by Frances Lincoln and is a great book to have.

Outside. A Guide to Discovering Nature
Review or purchase this great book from Amazon.co.uk here...

A real discovery book, excellent in all aspects of creating a love of nature, finding out and just getting outside with a purpose.

Outside. A Guide to Discovering Nature was published by Frances Lincoln in March 2016 and is a great book to buy now for the summer holidays and for enjoying time together in the Big Outside.

The authors are: Maria Ana Peixe Dias and Inês Teixeira do Rosário and the book is beautifully illustrated by Bernardo P. Carvalho, all from Portugal.

This book won the Bologna Regazzi award, which aims to arouse curiosity about fauna, flora and to get to know the outside world.

Every page turned has an intriguing illustration or fascinating information in the text. From how to build a swing and reach the clouds, with facts about making a swing in a tree to the different types and styles of beaks on birds! It is literally packed with information for children ages, 8-12 and for adults who have maybe forgotten that stuff or never knew!

Who does this footprint belong to?
What is this worm up to?
What is the name of this tree?

Even if we live in the city, nature is still all around us: clouds and stars, trees and flowers, rocks and beaches, birds, reptiles or mammals.
What are we waiting for?

I will definitely be using this book through the summer and can't wait for a child or two to share our time in the Outside. A Guide to Discovering Nature.

Very much recommended!!

Nature Art
Review or buy this book from Amazon.co.uk here...

This is a box as well as a book! It's packed with really interesting stuff to go outside and explore nature. It is a one stop guide to finding, observing, collecting and exhibiting your discoveries from flowers and blossoms to pebbles and plants.

The activity pack is very well illustrated and has the real feel of a pack designed for children between ages of around 6- 10 years. There are some very clear drawings and notes about all that you would need, from using your pockets, to taking envelopes and collecting bags for all the specimens collected.

I can imagine eager children setting off for the beach or the woods with such a pack and having great fun. There is a wonderful section on Journey Sticks, which is for every child that always picks up a stick on a walk and takes it some of the way along the path...

Jenny Bowers has a great portfolio of work in illustration and always starts with a pencil, a paint brush and a tube of black paint. Frances Lincoln Children's Publishers have made a brilliant book and box on the Little Collectors Nature Art.

As we approach the Summer Holidays this is one book we recommend to buy for all those trips which need the answer to the question, What Can I Do Now?

Hiccups
Review or buy this book from Amazon.co.uk...

A delightful first book from Holly Sterling, she has previously illustrated the Everybody Feels... series published also by Frances Lincoln.

Hiccups is newly published this month so watch out for it on line and in the bookshops, or you can buy direct through this picture link

Holly has a great way to show feelings in the characters and this story which follow Oscar the puppy's problem with hiccups that just won't go away, that is until Ruby dresses up as a cat. This is so scary that even the brave Oscar is scared!

Holly is an author/illustrator to watch, she has already won a number of awards, and was nominated for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2016.

Read an interview with Holly on Quarto Kids Blog, and on Holly's blogspot you can read about some interesting work with Michael Rosen.

We recommend Hiccups for all young children and for reading with parents too, you never know it may just be a long lasting cure for hiccups itself.

The Ancient Egyptians by Isabel and Imogen Greenberg

The Ancient Egyptians is the first book in the new Discover Series, published by Frances Lincoln and newly released on 7th April.

The style and illustrations make this a very good read into life at this time. It is a perfect companion for curriculum use and research in the classroom as well as in the home. It's great as inspiration for wall displays in schools across the UK. It's a book that is not only easy to read in the graphic style but will allow the information to stay with you.

The information in the book includes everything from pharaohs and mummies to daily life and the role of the Nile, via hieroglyphs and archaeology. A map and a timeline complete this fabulous book by graphic novelist Isabel Greenberg and her sister Imogen Greenberg.

There is also a special exhibition at The British Museum on Ancient Egypt's Sunken Cities which open on 19th May.

Jungle Book cover image
Buy this book from Amazon here...

An evocative tale of Mowgli and his story in the jungle, with Bagheeera, Baloo and the wolf pack. Mowgli has to face life with others who are not so keen to help, Kaa,the snake, the pack of monkeys and Shere Khan, the tiger.

The first in a series of classic texts reimagined into the modern day, published by Frances Lincoln  (Quarto Group), as Classics Here and Now. These will be a wonderful way of bringing the classic stories to children of today and maybe encouraging them to read the original versions.

The publication coincides with the release of a new feature length film of Jungle Book from Disney and it also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the death of Rudyard Kipling.

Robert Hunter is a London based illustrator and this is his first children's book, but he is well known with work for V&A, The New York Times and other places.

The images in the book are beautiful and bring a sense of a forever sunset in the jungle, using blue, purple and pinks. The presentation of the book is one for everyone and in hardback makes a really special present and book for keeps.

The parting words of Baloo are the call of any parent.

" Remember!" called Baloo. " If you ever get in trouble, use the Jungle Call!" And he made the sound, which carried through the night, mournful and long.

"AaHaoOO!"

But Mowgli had already gone.'

We recommend for ages from 6 years for sharing and for 7 onwards to adults and beyond for reading.

Ralph is forever getting under his family's feet, But when a fire threatens to burn the house down, Ralf stretches himself to the limit to save his family.

This is an intriguing book with a style of illustrations that turns over the page for you. When Ralf cannot wake his family you instantly feel the life of a dog when everyone is asleep and they are forever alert.

Ralf is published by Frances Lincoln and was released in February 2016, the hardback edition is well worth the money and has a lovely tactile sense to your fingers.

Jean Jullien is a graphic designer from France who is known for his symbols of peace in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris in November 2015. He now lives in London and is working on an eclectic body of work in illustration.

Coco Chanel cover image...
Buy this from Amazon.co.uk here...

This is a new series of books from Frances Lincoln Children's Books, which tell people's stories, and how they became famous. Starting off as children, finding a dream and following it through to a successful career.

The first book follows Coco Chanel, from her early life in an orphanage, where she is a genius with needle and thread, to her time as a cabaret singer, hat maker and international fashion designer. The book is written by Ms Isabel Sanchez Vegara and with beautifully stylised illustrations by Ana Albero.

The second book is about Frida Kahlo, she wanted to study medicine but had a bad childhood accident. But despite a terrible time her career culminated in a solo exhibition in America.

These are inspirational biographies perfect for encouraging children to follow their dreams. They are excellently published books in hardback and encourage you to open them from the start. I was in The British Library recently and noticed that many people just had to peep inside.
