Nature Art
Review or buy this book from Amazon.co.uk here...

This is a box as well as a book! It's packed with really interesting stuff to go outside and explore nature. It is a one stop guide to finding, observing, collecting and exhibiting your discoveries from flowers and blossoms to pebbles and plants.

The activity pack is very well illustrated and has the real feel of a pack designed for children between ages of around 6- 10 years. There are some very clear drawings and notes about all that you would need, from using your pockets, to taking envelopes and collecting bags for all the specimens collected.

I can imagine eager children setting off for the beach or the woods with such a pack and having great fun. There is a wonderful section on Journey Sticks, which is for every child that always picks up a stick on a walk and takes it some of the way along the path...

Jenny Bowers has a great portfolio of work in illustration and always starts with a pencil, a paint brush and a tube of black paint. Frances Lincoln Children's Publishers have made a brilliant book and box on the Little Collectors Nature Art.

As we approach the Summer Holidays this is one book we recommend to buy for all those trips which need the answer to the question, What Can I Do Now?

Immi
View, review or purchase this great book from Amazon.co.uk here...

A classic picture book, Immi is about friendship across cultures, reissued by popular demand and an Otter-Barry launch title for Spring 2016.

It is written and illustrated by Karin Littlewood in a beautiful style of painting which create a real atmosphere on the pages. Karin has illustrated over 40 childrens books and her work has been nominated three times for the Kate Greenaway Medal.

Immi lives in a land of ice and snow and one day when she is fishing she finds a wooden bird at the end of her fishing line. Every day after that, she discovers something new, until her igloo is the brightest in the land.

But where are these mysterious gifts coming from and who is sending them? One day she drops her small white bear pendant into the hole in the ice. Where does it go? It finds a home in a distant land.

'This is a book that will be with you forever, we recommend it for all ages of children and adults'.

Mr Badger
View, review or purchase from Amazon.co.uk here...

Mr Badger is always on hand to cope with many surprises at the Boubles Grand Hotel.

My favourite story is Mr Badger and the Missing Ape, Algernon who is usually kept stuffed in a glass case in the lobby. But Lady Celia's granddaughter is not happy with this gorilla and wants it sent away.

As she usually gets just whatever she wants the alarming disappearance one morning gives Mr Badger quite a task, but solve it, he does.

There are four stories in the one book, which is full of brilliant sketches and the characters really come to life.

Mr Badger is written by Leigh Hobbs, who has an amazing talent for writing and tfor illustrating too. He has a great website for a whole range of his books.

This year he has been appointed as the Australian Children's Laureate and there are whole host of great activities for children all over the world as well as Australia.

Mr Badger is published by Allen and Unwin, Australia but can be purchased on-line in the UK, from Amazon.co.uk, here.

A great book and we recommend for children 7+, especially for those who still get a lot from the images through each chapter.

The Anti Princess Club 1
Review and purchase this book on Amazon.co.uk

The Anti Princess Club is a series of books which follows four best friends; Emily, Martin, Bella, Singh, Grace Bennett and Chloe Karalis and they are just 'sick' of being treated like damsels in distress.

They are a thoroughly good read and the style and illustrations by Sarah Davis fit the whole scene in the books. They are published by Allen and Unwin and are a first time series from Australian author Samantha Turnbull.

They read as a book which is really for children of that age, when they know what they want, but just can't seem to stop adults and others treating them in a stereotyped way. It gives also a real sense of meaning to some of the trials and problems around making friends, families, teamwork and courage of your own convictions.

We also love the notes for teachers which are available on-line and free to use alongside the books, they cover a wealth of learning opportunities.

Coco Chanel cover image...
Buy this from Amazon.co.uk here...

This is a new series of books from Frances Lincoln Children's Books, which tell people's stories, and how they became famous. Starting off as children, finding a dream and following it through to a successful career.

The first book follows Coco Chanel, from her early life in an orphanage, where she is a genius with needle and thread, to her time as a cabaret singer, hat maker and international fashion designer. The book is written by Ms Isabel Sanchez Vegara and with beautifully stylised illustrations by Ana Albero.

The second book is about Frida Kahlo, she wanted to study medicine but had a bad childhood accident. But despite a terrible time her career culminated in a solo exhibition in America.

These are inspirational biographies perfect for encouraging children to follow their dreams. They are excellently published books in hardback and encourage you to open them from the start. I was in The British Library recently and noticed that many people just had to peep inside.

A wonderful series and now republished with Frances Lincoln Children's Books.

Image 2Mortimer and Sword Excalibur is the fifth book and Mrs Jones packs Arabel and Mortimer off for a quiet afternoon in Rainwater Crescent Gardens. But as Mortimer investigates the new underground car park he discovers that it is just possible that the long lost sword, Excalibur is waiting to be found.

The Spiral Stair, is based in the zoo. Arabel comes to the rescue as Mortimer becomes entangled in snakes and giraffes.

The books are an excellent new edition and the compact size is just right for an emerging reader, or even for a fluent reader in the midst of a busy holiday time.

Illustrations are, undoubtedly the best of Quentin Blake and portray the characters brilliantly. The text is pure Joan Aiken, with the sharpness of the story intrigue and mix of humdrum life and exciting adventure.

Image 1My Uncle's Amazing Indian Wedding is certainly a day to remember and this book is full of colour and images with text that shows just how the whole community is involved in the wedding.

The girls had mehndi ( henna) on their hands. The groom had holy water sprinkled over him from the temple and Swayam, the boy in the story was going to be the markundhi, a very important person at the wedding.

This a story that many children will relate to about going into a culture of their own backgrounds and making a special journey to visit family in India.

Published by Frances Lincoln and written by Prodeepta Das, this is a great book for families and for schools.

Image 4When Mum, Tom, Tilly, Lily and Eddie decide to go on a holiday, a camping trip sounds like the ideal break.

After setting up camp, there are lots of adventures ahead for Eddie and his family.

The first adventure was how to get the tent in place and eventually beds are ready and Mum has a flask of hot chocolate, even though she looks very ready for sleep herself!

A wonderful new book about a family holiday, with adventures for Eddie along the way, including a hunt for Bouncer the dog, in the big dark wood. This will have appeal for parents, boys and girls. The illustrations are great and show the characters of the children really well. At the end there is a section on Tips for Campers and a note on knots, and a charming picture of how to tie the dog's lead to a tree!

It is written and illustrated by Sarah Garland and published by Frances Lincoln Children's Books.

A book which will certainly find a place in my bookshelf.

Image 2Azzi and her parents are in danger. They have to leave their home and escape to another country on a frightening journey by car and boat.

This is a telling story, set in graphic novel format and now available in paperback from Frances Lincoln Children's Books.

It is written and illustrated by Sarah Garland, who has worked directly with refugee families and the text shows that Sarah has been able to hear and understand the thoughts from children as they leave friends and family.

But for all the hardships, this book explores the resilience of children and the times when Azzi, starts to make friends and to learn at school are so valuable for her and her family.

A quote from Julia Eccleshare, ' Sarah Garland tenderly creates a story of home from the troubled experience of immigration in this warm-hearted picture book.'

This is a great story to share and to have in any school or home. We recommend to all our schools and Children's Centres
